The number of sales of hydrogen-powered vehicles registered worldwide between January and November of last year was 18,457 units, according to SNE Research, a market research institute specializing in energy, which was announced on the 4th. This represents an increase of 14.2% from the same period last year.

During the same time period, Hyundai’s hydrogen-powered Nexo sold 10,700 units, surpassing the 10,000 mark for the first time since its introduction. Additionally, its global market share was 58.0%, up 3.5 percentage points from the previous year, significantly above the second-place Toyota Mirai from Japan (3,238 units). Shanghai Datong’s “EUNIQ7” and Honda’s “Clarity” each sold 204 and 209 units, respectively.

Sales of Nexo increased steadily over the years, rising from 727 units in 2018, the initial year of its introduction, to 4194 units in 2019, 5786 units in 2020, and 8502 units in 2021. Sales volume are said to have increased because hydrogen cars are perceived favorably and receive bigger subsidies than electric vehicles.

Hyundai Motor Company and Toyota are expected to introduce hydrogen-powered cars in the Chinese market and start seriously pursuing the market, according to SNE Research. It is well known that Hyundai Motor Company is thinking about introducing the “Xcient” huge hydrogen-electric truck in China.
