CEEC Songyuan Green Hydrogen-Ammonia-Methanol Project Exceeds 500 Tonnes of Daily Green Ammonia Output

On September 6, Jilin Daily published an article titled “Building a National-Level Benchmark for the Hydrogen  Industry: CEEC Songyuan Integrated Green Hydrogen-Ammonia-Methanol Project Operating Smoothly,” disclosing the latest developments at the CEEC Songyuan project.

 

Since entering operation, the production units at Phase I of the CEEC Songyuan integrated green hydrogen-ammonia-methanol project have been operating steadily, with peak daily green ammonia output exceeding 500 tonnes. Meanwhile, construction of Phase II is set to begin. Once fully completed, Phase II will provide annual green ammonia production capacity of 200,000 tonnes.

 

According to publicly available information, the CEEC Songyuan project has a total investment of nearly RMB 30 billion and is currently the world’s largest green hydrogen-ammonia-methanol integrated project by scale. The project is planned to produce a total of 800,000 tonnes per year of green synthetic ammonia and green methanol across multiple phases.

 

Phase I includes 800 MW of renewable energy generation capacity and is designed to produce 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen, 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia and 200,000 tonnes of green methanol annually. The phase officially commenced operations on December 16, 2025.

 

On January 9, 2026, the chemical segment of Phase II of the CEEC Songyuan Hydrogen  Industrial Park (Integrated Green Hydrogen-Ammonia-Methanol Project) received project filing approval. With a total investment of RMB 4.12 billion, Phase II will include two synthetic ammonia units, each with an annual production capacity of 220,000 tonnes, a 126,000 Nm³/h electrolytic hydrogen production system and a 42,000 Nm³/h air separation unit for nitrogen production.

 

Technically, the project adopts an integrated approach combining direct wind and solar power supply, energy-storage-based peak shaving, high-efficiency water electrolysis for hydrogen production and dynamic ammonia synthesis.

 

The project has achieved four world records in terms of project scale, hydrogen storage capacity, flexible-load operating range and the scale of alkaline water electrolysis equipment.

 

It has also been selected as one of the first batch of green and low-carbon advanced technology demonstration projects by China’s National Development and Reform Commission, one of the first batch of green liquid fuel technology R&D and industrialisation pilot projects by the National Energy Administration, and one of the first batch of hydrogen  pilot projects in the energy sector. In addition, it has been selected as a Global Energy Interconnection demonstration project.

 

All key core equipment used in the project has been domestically manufactured. The project addresses a gap in China’s technology for flexible production of hydrogen, ammonia and methanol directly coupled with renewable power. It has also generated more than 100 patents, proprietary technologies and standards and specifications.

 

On the commercialisation front, the project has obtained ISCC EU certification and signed what has been described as the world’s first sales contract for green ammonia as an ocean-going shipping fuel. It has also reduced green ammonia production costs to levels approaching those of conventional “blue ammonia,” marking further progress toward commercialisation.
