H2 OnSet launches hydrogen-powered service designed for film and TV production

H2 OnSet

H2 OnSet has announced a hydrogen power service providing film and TV productions with zero emission electricity power.

The “first-of-its-kind” solution was developed in consultation with those involved in film and TV production and will use low-carbon hydrogen suppliers, including a generator boasting a sustained AC power output of 165kW

The on-demand, drop-and-swap service generator will be built by Sommers Generator Systems – a Canadian distributor of standby, portable and towable power designed for industrial and commercial applications.

The first deployment of the H2 OnSet service will be in Toronto, Canada, anticipated to begin in the summer (2024) before launching in other major markets.

David Hardy, Chief Market Development Officer at h2 OnSet, described the service as a “game changer” for the film and TV industry.

“The ability to deliver low-carbon hydrogen fuel to production crews where, when and as needed, anchors all the other zero-emission power technologies on set, such as rechargeable batteries, to a low-carbon energy system,” added Hardy.

Chris McGregor, President of Sommers Generator Systems, added, “The H2 OnSet team has been a trusted partner with a clear line-of-sight on the needs of this market throughout the development of our revolutionary generator.”

The service is supported by the climate tech accelerator, Third Derivative, as part of the Clean Mobile Power Cohort. This is part of the Clean Mobile Power Initiative, launched last year (2023) by Netflix and the Walt Disney Company.

In the UK, Hydrologiq provide hydrogen-powered, zero emission power to the event and festival industry. Previously, the company has deployed generators at UK festival Boomtown Fair, two National Highways construction sites in Lancashire, and at the Aberdeen City Hydrogen Energy Site (ACHES) in Scotland.
