China's First Cave-Based Hydrogen Storage Project Receives $17.8 Million in National Funding

On February 18th, the Development and Reform Bureau of Daye City, Hubei Province, announced that the Daye City Mining Area Green Electricity and Green Hydrogen Production, Storage, and Utilization Integrated Hydrogen Energy Mine Comprehensive Construction Project received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission for the Clean Low-Carbon Hydrogen Energy Innovation Application Project, securing a central budget investment of 120 million yuan.

 

It is also the largest investment and highest funding sought for a green new energy project in Daye's history. According to Hubei Daily, the project has a planned total investment of 5.2 billion yuan, including sectors such as photovoltaic power generation, green electricity for hydrogen production, and integrated energy stations. The hydrogen production factory, being the core of the project, plans an investment of 250 million yuan to construct three electric hydrogen production factories on the abandoned industrial and mining lands of Yanfan Village, Jiangqiao Village, and Raofa Village, with an expected annual hydrogen production of 45 million standard cubic meters and a byproduct of 22.5 million standard cubic meters of oxygen. The integrated energy stations, serving as the project's hydrogen storage and supply hub, plan an investment of 400 million yuan to build three smart energy stations for oil, hydrogen, and electricity in Jianshandian Town, Daye East, and the Olympic Avenue.

 

The project officially commenced in March 2023, undertaking large-scale cave hydrogen storage construction in the abandoned mines of Daye City and underground distributed hydrogen storage construction at the integrated energy stations. The Daye City Green Electricity and Green Hydrogen Production, Storage, and Utilization Integrated Hydrogen Energy Mine Comprehensive Construction Project is jointly constructed by

Hubei Guanggu East State-Owned Capital Investment and Operation Group Co., Ltd.,

Huaneng Changjiang Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd.,

MCC Wuhan Prospecting Engineering and Technology Co., Ltd.,

Wuhan Troowin Power System Technology Co., Ltd.

It focuses on seven main construction aspects: photovoltaic power generation, green electricity for hydrogen production, cave and underground distributed hydrogen storage, pipeline hydrogen transportation, hydrogen energy industrial park, digital management platform, and hydrogen energy application. It aims to break through core technologies in hydrogen fuel cell key components and system integration, striving to become a source of innovation and a high-end equipment manufacturing base for the hydrogen energy industry. MCC Wuhan Prospecting Engineering and Technology Co., Ltd. is the main research and development and technology integration unit of the project.

 

On January 21, 2024, the Daye Deep Ground Hydrogen Storage Scientific Research Pilot Base Project in Hubei Province held a groundbreaking ceremony. This project is an important part of the Daye Green Electricity and Green Hydrogen Production, Storage, and Utilization Integrated Hydrogen Energy Mine Comprehensive Construction Project and is the first domestic research and pilot base for cave hydrogen storage and underground distributed hydrogen storage.

 

The research areas include basic theory of cave hydrogen storage, critical hydrogen-contact materials, core construction processes, and intelligent control platforms, alongside the engineering application innovation of the entire hydrogen energy industry chain from photovoltaic, hydrogen production, hydrogen transportation, hydrogen storage to hydrogen refueling.

 

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Sun Huanquan, the Chief Engineer of China Petrochemical Corporation and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, stated, "This project marks the first application in the field of cave hydrogen storage domestically and is an important measure for developing green low-carbon technology, optimizing energy structure adjustment, and improving resource utilization efficiency."

 

Yang Chunhe, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and researcher at the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Wuhan, mentioned, "Deep underground energy storage is a major strategy to ensure national energy security and an important approach to achieving the national 'dual carbon' strategy. Hubei Province has superior geological conditions for deep ground energy storage, and deploying the deep ground energy storage industry is a 'fulcrum' for Hubei's innovation-driven development."

 

Currently, the hydrogen production factory of the Green Electricity and Green Hydrogen Production, Storage, and Utilization Integrated Hydrogen Energy Mine Comprehensive Construction Project has completed the monitoring of the foundation piles of the factory building and is undergoing main construction. Two of the three energy stations are about to complete their foundation pile projects, expected to be operational by June 2024.
