HVS to supply heavy-duty hydrogen units to haulage and plant hire business

Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS) will deliver 30 hydrogen-electric tractor units to Explore Plant & Transport Solutions.

Under the agreement, the hydrogen-powered vehicles will be deployed across the UK. A service and maintenance plan will also be provided, along with training on the safe use of hydrogen and refuelling, and the hydrogen fuelling infrastructure needed.

Explore supplies transport and plant hire services to UK customers within the aerospace, construction rail and nuclear industries. The company’s Operations Director, Chris Gatheridge believes hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles will “revolutionise” the long-haul and construction logistics sectors.

Gatheridge added, “These new HVS units will significantly reduce Explore’s carbon footprint, and this agreement underscores our commitment to advancing green technology within our business.”

John McLeister, Chief Commercial Officer for HVS, added, “Our innovative, zero-emission fuel cell technology provides fleet operators with the heavier payloads, longer range and faster refuelling required of modern logistics operations seeking to decarbonise their fleets.”

HVS’ heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are currently undergoing trials in the UK. One of its units successfully pulled a trailer at the high-speed track at UTAC in Millbrook and it “didn’t disappoint with excellent performance on its very first test run.”

Speaking to H2 View earlier this year, McLeister said the company is focused on the next phase of vehicle testing. He added, “A HVS vehicle has the potential to remove at least a tonne of CO2, circa 1,000 miles of displaced diesel operations.”
