Stralis Signs MoU to Test Hydrogen-Electric Aircraft Technology in Japan

- The MoU with Akita University and Akita Prefectural University opens the door for joint testing, tech development, and workforce training, with an eye toward 2035 commercial aviation decarbonization goals.
Australian aerospace firm Stralis Aircraft has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan’s Joint Research Center for Electric Architecture, operated by Akita University and Akita Prefectural University, to test its hydrogen-electric propulsion systems at one of Japan’s most advanced electric aircraft facilities. The agreement was sealed during a Queensland government trade mission, highlighting growing ties between Queensland and Japan in clean aviation innovation.
“This isn’t just an MoU—it’s a runway for clean technology, innovation, and workforce development between Queensland and Japan,” said Queensland Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training Ros Bates. The partnership will also include training programs for aviation technicians and engineers to prepare for the coming hydrogen-powered aircraft era.
Stralis claims its proprietary hydrogen-electric powertrain is six times lighter than traditional fuel cell alternatives, offering aircraft ten times the range of battery-electric counterparts, all at half the operating cost of fossil fuel models. The company aims to demonstrate its hydrogen-powered Bonanza aircraft in Japan by late 2026, showcasing the commercial and emissions-reduction potential of its technology.
Japan’s METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) is targeting 2035 for the commercialisation of decarbonised passenger aircraft, and Stralis’ collaboration with Japanese aerospace firms aligns closely with this timeline. The Joint Research Center in Akita, meanwhile, sees the partnership as a model for international cooperation in sustainable aerospace R&D.
“We look forward to contributing to both talent development and a more sustainable future,” said Junichi Sakaki, Director at the Akita research center.
The initiative has been actively supported by Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ) Japan, which has helped Stralis build connections with Japanese firms and universities participating in global next-generation aviation programs.
