ZeroAvia Reaches Liquid Hydrogen Fueling Milestone Aboard Retrofitted Test Aircraft
Author:
Hydrogen aviation startup ZeroAvia has hit a new benchmark in its flight programme after completing its first liquid hydrogen refuelling operation on the Dornier 228 test aircraft. The milestone took place at Cotswold Airport in Kemble, UK, where a newly installed cryogenic tank supplied by Air Liquide was filled with 16kg of LH₂. The tank will store the hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures of -253°C to support forthcoming propulsion integration tests.
The fuelling process lasted approximately four hours and involved a full run-through of operational procedures before the system reached “full status”. The LH₂ will be used in a hybrid-electric setup to feed hydrogen to fuel cells, which in turn will power an electric motor driving the aircraft’s left propeller. “A proud moment for everyone involved and an exciting step toward clean flight. More to follow as we prepare for the next stage of testing – feeding hydrogen from the tank to the fuel cells to then provide power to the electric motor and spin the left-side propeller,” the company stated.
The milestone underscores ZeroAvia’s commitment to advancing hydrogen-powered flight and follows the company’s earlier work with gaseous hydrogen propulsion. As the aviation sector faces growing pressure to decarbonise, successful integration of cryogenic LH₂ systems could provide a critical pathway toward scalable zero-emissions flight.
