Air Products has advanced construction of its new Rotterdam liquid hydrogen facility to more than 65% completion and is expanding supply capacity ahead of planned operations in 2027.

The liquefier is being built in the Port of Rotterdam and is designed to reinforce and modernize Air Products’ existing hydrogen footprint in the Netherlands. When operational in 2027, it is set to be the largest liquid hydrogen production facility in Europe.

The facility is expanding Air Products’ liquid hydrogen product availability and is intended to strengthen the company’s capabilities in the region. It will connect with the company’s long-standing hydrogen distribution infrastructure in Rotterdam’s industrial cluster.

Air Products said the project is being developed around customer demand in sectors including electronics manufacturing, space applications, industrial processing, and emerging energy. Those markets require reliable supply, logistics, and infrastructure to support operations and meet regulatory requirements.

The liquefier will be supplied through Air Products’ integrated regional hydrogen network, including production from multiple hydrogen sources in the industrial cluster. The company said the facility is expected to provide additional supply alternatives for customers in the Benelux region, France, Germany, and the UK, with liquid hydrogen supporting transport over longer distances.

“Customers depend on hydrogen availability and reliability to run their operations every day,” said Miquel Lope, Vice President of Northern Continent at Air Products. “The continued progress of our new Rotterdam liquefier reflects ongoing investment in supply reliability in the region. Our commitment is to providing customers with a modern, resilient hydrogen supply platform they can rely on as their needs continue to grow.”

“As Europe’s largest port and a key energy hub, Rotterdam is committed to enabling Europe’s developing hydrogen economy,” Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said. “Air Products’ investment strengthens the infrastructure required for industrial decarbonization and ensures reliable, locally available supply for businesses across the region.”
