Currently, the company Gas Valpo registers a 10% injection of green hydrogen into the natural gas networks that supply approximately 4,600 families in La Serena and Coquimbo, a project aimed at demonstrating the benefits of this energy source for home use, contributing to the environment.

This initiative – unique in Chile and South America – prompted a visit from the Regional Secretary of Energy, Fabián Páez, to verify the operation of this innovative system that allows for the reduction of CO2 emissions and contributes to the decarbonization goals of the Ministry of Energy, considering that the Coquimbo Region has an advanced development in renewable energies.

The plant began by gradually increasing the percentage of green hydrogen injected into the fuel, starting with a 3.5% blend. After incorporating an electrolyzer (which separates hydrogen (H2) from oxygen (O) from water), that percentage was increased to 5%. Currently, it is at 10%, and customer inspections are being conducted to evaluate the process. The company expects to reach 15% by 2026.

The goal is to achieve a fuel mix composed of 80% natural gas and 20% hydrogen. This would reduce CO2 emissions by 340 tons per year.

The Regional Secretary of Energy, Fabián Páez, emphasized the importance of having a pioneering plant that demonstrates the benefits of this energy source. “In the Coquimbo Region, we have one of the few plants in South America that uses hydrogen in its gas injection system for residential distribution. This is a significant investment in reducing carbon emissions, as it eliminates these emissions. We also received information that, through their distribution system, they help stabilize gas prices because they don't use petroleum-derived gas. This is a significant benefit for people, as it helps keep gas costs down for their household needs.”

The authority added that this project “generates less carbon emissions, maintains values for the user and projects decarbonization and the use of clean energy for human consumption in the Coquimbo Region.”

Jorge Briceño, zonal and project manager for Gas Valpo, highlighted the progress of this initiative and its contribution to local families. “As a company, we are very proud of the manufacturing, production, storage, and injection of hydrogen, which contributes to reducing combustion pollution when our customers are using their appliances for cooking or showering in the morning. Currently, we are at 10% hydrogen injection, which is generated through blending with 90% natural gas.”

The project is monitored by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of La Serena to verify the compatibility of green hydrogen with the materials of the gas networks and the appliances of the customers, in addition to measuring the quality of the combustion and the reduction of emissions.

It is worth mentioning that users and families do not perceive changes in the use of appliances, such as stoves, water heaters or others, nor does the payment of their natural gas bills vary.
