ATOME has reached final investment decision on its Villeta plant in Paraguay, which is set to produce low-carbon Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) fertilizer using 100% renewable baseload hydropower.
The facility is intended to produce 260,000 tonnes per year of low-carbon fertilizer and has been described by backers as a first-of-its-kind industrial-scale green hydrogen fertilizer plant. ATOME said the project will use 100% renewable baseload hydropower, enabling the production of low-carbon CAN fertilizer independent from fossil-fuel volatility.
Located in Paraguay, in the heart of Latin America, the project is targeting what ATOME described as the world’s largest fertilizer import market. Over the project’s life, it is expected to displace up to 12.5 million tonnes of CO₂e.
ATOME originated and developed the plant and said it will continue to manage it through construction and operation. Major project partners include CASALE as the Swiss EPC contractor, Yara International as the offtaker, and Hy24 as leader of the investor consortium.
Olivier Mussat, Chief Executive Officer of ATOME, said: “Reaching FID at Villeta is a defining achievement for ATOME which originated, developed and will continue to manage the project through construction and operation.”
Construction is expected shortly following FID, with full production projected to commence by or before October 2029.
