MB Energy Signs First Hamburg Ammonia Terminal Capacity Term Sheet

MB Energy has taken a commercial step forward on its planned ammonia import terminal in Hamburg, signing the first capacity-booking term sheet with S.E.T. SELECT ENERGY at the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam. From the planned start of commercial operations in 2029, SELECT is expected to become a customer of the Hamburg-Blumensand terminal and bring RFNBO ammonia into Germany, including volumes linked to its Indian partner Juno Joule Green Energy. 

 

The planned supply route points to India’s growing role in Europe’s renewable fuels strategy. SELECT expects ammonia to come from Juno Joule Green Energy’s planned project at NTPC Green Energy Limited’s Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, as well as other projects in which SELECT is involved. RFNBO ammonia — produced from renewable hydrogen and classified under EU renewable-fuel rules — is becoming one of the more practical ways to move green hydrogen across long distances.

 

The agreement follows a major permitting milestone for MB Energy. Hamburg’s Authority for Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture granted the company approval in April 2026 to build and operate the planned ammonia import terminal at the Blumensand tank terminal in the Port of Hamburg. MB Energy says the terminal is expected to become Germany’s first large-scale ammonia import hub, although construction remains subject to a final investment decision.

 

The planned facility is part of MB Energy’s wider New Energy Gate project and is designed to import and redistribute ammonia for industrial use, hydrogen storage, and potentially shipping fuel. Reports on the permit indicate expected terminal capacity of around 600,000 tonnes of ammonia per year, with plans including a new ammonia storage tank, upgraded vessel and barge infrastructure, and rail-loading facilities.
