Regensburg -- New hydrogen network for intralogistics: At the BMW Group plant in Regensburg, plant manager Armin Ebner, together with Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy Hubert Aiwanger and Regensburg's Mayor Dr. Thomas Burger, today gave the symbolic go-ahead for a new hydrogen infrastructure.
A large portion of the six kilometers of stainless-steel pipelines has already been laid in the production area over the past few months, and the installation will be fully completed this fall. By 2031, the entire intralogistics fleet at the Regensburg site is to be gradually converted from electric to hydrogen propulsion.
“With the commissioning of a new hydrogen network, BMW is once again demonstrating that hydrogen is no longer just a futuristic concept, but a concrete reality in practice. Instead of pushing through ideological directives, we must develop renewable energies in a technology-neutral and economically viable way. This is the only way the energy transition can succeed. That is why the Bavarian State Government has been committed to ramping up the hydrogen economy for years. Our funding programs for hydrogen filling stations and electrolyzers also ensure Bavaria's pioneering role in this future-oriented field. BMW's conversion of its logistics fleet to hydrogen reinforces our commitment,” emphasized Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger.
Regensburg's Mayor, Dr. Thomas Burger, added: “The BMW Group plant in Regensburg has recognized the signs of the times and is consistently pursuing the path towards hydrogen propulsion. This pioneering spirit strengthens Regensburg and our economy far beyond our city limits.”

Plant Manager Armin Ebner: “By using hydrogen, we are making our intralogistics highly flexible and scalable. The gradual switch from electric to hydrogen propulsion contributes to our BMW iFACTORY, a digital and sustainable factory of the future. Refueling is possible in a very short time and takes place at decentralized filling stations along the logistics routes. We are also expanding the energy mix at the plant.”
