Hong Kong site has 20 DC charging bays and five 600kW charging units, while Sinopec narrows its “first” claim after opening an earlier converted petrol-station site at Fo Tan

• Sinopec Hong Kong has opened its PIT Ultra Kowloon Bay charging station with 20 DC fast-charging bays served by five charging units rated at up to 600kW each.
• The company calls it Hong Kong’s first traditional petrol station fully converted into a charging-only facility, although Sinopec had already opened a fast-charging station on a former petrol-station site at Fo Tan in May.

 

Sinopec Hong Kong has opened a new 600kW ultra-fast charging station at 8 Kai Fuk Road in Kowloon Bay after converting the former petrol station entirely to electric-vehicle charging.

 

The PIT Ultra Kowloon Bay Max 600kW site began operation on August 31 and has 20 DC fast-charging spaces. Five charging units can deliver up to 600kW each, with an intelligent power-management system distributing available power between vehicles.

 

The 600kW figure is the maximum output of each charging unit, not the power available simultaneously at every bay. Sinopec says all 20 vehicles can receive more than 100kW per bay when the station is fully occupied.

 

Six of the 20 spaces use fully liquid-cooled charging technology. Sinopec says compatible vehicles with 800V or higher-voltage electrical systems can charge from 20% to 80% in around 10 minutes, although actual charging speed depends on the vehicle, battery condition and other operating factors.

 

Eight spaces are equipped with both GB/T and CCS2 connectors, supporting vehicles using Mainland Chinese and international charging standards. The site also includes charging provision for large vehicles including double-decker buses.

 

Fo Tan Opened First

Sinopec had already opened its PIT Fo Tan Ultra-fast Charging Station in May 2026.

 

Hong Kong government records list the Fo Tan site at 34A Shan Mei Street as an operating dedicated fast-charging station on former petrol-station land. The government had originally tendered both the Fo Tan and Kowloon Bay sites for conversion from petrol-filling-station use.

 

Hong Kong’s Environment and Ecology Secretary Tse Chin-wan also described Fo Tan at the Kowloon Bay opening as the city’s first fast-charging station successfully converted from petrol-station land.

 

Sinopec therefore describes Kowloon Bay more narrowly as the first traditional petrol station fully converted into a dedicated charging-only facility.

 

The distinction appears to be that Fo Tan was developed from a vacant former petrol-station site, while Kowloon Bay involved the full conversion of a traditional petrol station into a pure EV-charging operation. Hong Kong government documents describe both locations as petrol-filling-station sites converted for fast charging.

 

Hong Kong Converts More Petrol-Station Sites

Hong Kong has been releasing former petrol-station land for dedicated fast-charging facilities as EV numbers increase.

 

Government tenders have covered sites in Kowloon Bay, Fo Tan, Tai Po, Tsing Yi, Tseung Kwan O and other locations. Separately, existing petrol stations are being allowed to add fast chargers without fully abandoning fuel sales.

 

As of the end of April, 29 existing petrol stations had received approval to install 85 fast chargers. The government expects charging installations at around 60 petrol stations eventually to provide approximately 180 fast chargers.

 

Sinopec says it plans to add more PIT high-speed charging sites around Hong Kong, including further locations within its petrol-station network.
