September 6, 2026 — China has completed its first green methanol bunkering operation for an international-voyage bulk carrier at Guangzhou Port, marking a major milestone in the development of the country’s green methanol bunkering network.

The ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering operation was carried out on the afternoon of September 6 at the Dayushan Anchorage in Guangzhou. The bunkering vessel Daqing 268, operated by China Shipping & Sinopec Suppliers Co., Ltd., supplied 1,021 tonnes of pure bio-based methanol to Green Future, the world’s first methanol dual-fuel Ultramax bulk carrier. The green methanol was supplied by CIMC Enric’s Zhanjiang production facility.

The operation also marked Guangzhou Port’s first methanol ship-to-ship bunkering operation, representing a breakthrough in the port’s green methanol supply capabilities.

Building on existing methanol bunkering operations in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, the deployment further connects Guangdong’s domestically produced biomass-based methanol supply chain across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The regional green methanol supply chain, covering production, storage, transportation and bunkering, is evolving from individual pilot projects toward coordinated operations across the region, supporting the low-carbon transition of shipping in the Greater Bay Area.

CIMC Enric’s Zhanjiang green methanol facility is China’s first large-scale bio-based green methanol facility. Its Phase 1 project has an annual production capacity of 50,000 tonnes and achieves a carbon emissions reduction rate of more than 85%. The project has obtained ISCC EU certification, enabling its products to meet international requirements for shipping decarbonisation and support the use of green fuels in vessels worldwide.

Since entering operation, the facility has maintained stable production and supplied green methanol to major domestic ports. The project strengthens CIMC Enric’s position in China’s growing green methanol industry and provides additional supply capacity for the maritime sector’s transition toward lower-carbon fuels.
