Kawasaki Heavy Industries has completed installation of a 30 MW-class hydrogen-fired gas turbine power generation system at RWE’s Emsland power plant in Germany.

The system is located in the hydrogen park at the Emsland power plant in Lingen, Lower Saxony, and uses Kawasaki’s 30 MW-class L30A gas turbine. Kawasaki manufactured the gas turbine at its Akashi Works, while group company Kawasaki Gas Turbine Europe GmbH (KGE) incorporated it into the generating unit and installed the equipment.

Following commissioning of the gas turbine and generating unit, Kawasaki and RWE plan to begin a power generation demonstration using 100% hydrogen fuel. According to Kawasaki, the project will be the first hydrogen-only power generation demonstration in Europe using a 30 MW-class gas turbine.

The demonstration will use CO₂-free hydrogen produced through water electrolysis using green electricity supplied by RWE-owned wind power facilities. The project will also test flexible power generation by mixing natural gas as a supplementary fuel and varying the hydrogen co-firing ratio between 0% and 100% to match hydrogen availability and market requirements.
