Moeve and ArcelorMittal Team Up to Put Green Hydrogen to Work in Steelmaking

  • The new entity, which was born under its Green Molecules to Green Steel (G2G) alliance, will have its own and public funds to carry out projects of scale that represent an advance in competitiveness and sustainability
  • The central axis of the project is made up of energies based on green molecules – such as biogas and biomethane, renewable hydrogen and its derivatives and second-generation biofuels – and its use to accelerate the transition to steel produced with low emissions of economically viable CO2, connecting the energy transition with the decarbonization of the European steel industry

 

Moeve and ArcelorMittal combine innovation expertise, energy solutions and industrial capabilities to build a new vehicle that develops projects with a direct impact on competitiveness and sustainability of the productive fabric. The alliance under which this new platform, Green Molecules to Green Steel (G2G) has materialized, seeks to develop, scale and apply disruptive technologies that allow green molecules to drive the transition to low-emission steel and industrial decarbonization.



The new platform, created by both companies at 50%, will have its own funds to carry out the different projects, in which Sekuens, the Agency of Science, Business Competitiveness and Asturian Innovation, will also participate, through the present and future vehicles available for the promotion of innovation in Asturias. The future participation of other public agencies (regional or national) or private entities is not ruled out, provided that they are aligned with the objectives and structure of this platform.

 

This transversal and public-private collaboration will seek the development of industrial demonstrators that would be subsequently scaled in their production centers. The G2G alliance places green molecules (such as biomethane and biogas, renewable hydrogen and second-generation derivatives and biofuels) and other solutions to advance decarbonization (as more efficient catalysts) at the heart of the new industrial model through a hub powered by the innovation centers of Moeve and ArcelorMittal. These laboratories promote disruptive and cutting-edge technologies for the capture of CO 22, valuing these molecules; biotechnology that allows improvements in production processes or artificial intelligence applied to the creation of new materials. It is an open and collaborative ecosystem that strengthens the innovative fabric, gives opportunities to startups, universities and technology centers and encourages the attraction of talent.

G2G is aligned with Moeve’s goal of accelerating the energy transition through collaborative innovation to transform energy, chemistry and mobility, and ArcelorMittal’s goals of responsible transition to steel produced with low 2CO2 emissions. Moeve, through its roadmap, Positive Motion, has set itself the challenge of leading the energy transition from 2030 with ambitious projects such as its new second-generation biofuels plant, which is currently under construction, and the development of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley. ArcelorMittal has in Spain its two leading steel projects with low emissions in Europe (in Sestao, XCarb® recycled and renewablely produced for flat products, and in Gijón for long products) with strong investments and a clearly innovative character.
