The Netherlands Hydrogenland has presented a frontrunner award to Watermeln, the Dutch market leader in hydrogen generators.

As the Dutch market leader in hydrogen generators, Watermeln shows that the energy transition is not abstract, but rather very concrete: the company makes hydrogen tangible by actively building an integrated hydrogen chain in which production, storage and application come together.

In doing so, Watermeln proves that hydrogen can already create economic and social value. It is precisely these kinds of projects that are essential for the future of the Netherlands. Watermeln shows how innovation works in practice and inspires other regions and organizations to get moving.

The company’s pitch is straightforward: diesel generators should no longer be the default answer for temporary and off-grid power. Watermeln develops mobile hydrogen generators designed for construction sites, events, charging hubs and other locations with limited or no grid connection. Its systems use green hydrogen, fuel cells and batteries to provide electricity without on-site CO₂, NOx or particulate emissions, making them a cleaner alternative to diesel units.

Watermeln’s core product, the WM-200, is built in a 10-foot container and combines a 70kW fuel cell with a 120kWh battery system. The unit can deliver 200kW rated battery power and up to 350kW AC peak power, and it can operate off-grid, grid-connected or with extra battery support for peak loads. The company also says its generators can be scaled up to 1MW through modular deployment. 

The hydrogen supply side is just as important as the generator itself. Watermeln pairs its units with external hydrogen tanks, including containerized systems with up to 440kg of hydrogen storage and an average usable electrical output of 6.1MWh. It also offers smaller Cube Bundles with roughly 35kg of hydrogen capacity, giving customers a more flexible option for site power, backup storage and hydrogen swaps.

That integrated model is what makes the company more interesting than a simple hardware supplier. Watermeln provides transport, installation, hydrogen supply, monitoring and service support, aiming to make clean temporary power as easy to use as diesel. Its online monitoring platform tracks performance, fuel levels and maintenance needs in real time, which matters for customers who cannot afford downtime on construction sites, festivals or remote operations.
