John Cockerill Hydrogen has completed its first 5 MW electrolyzer manufactured and assembled in France, one year after acquiring McPhy’s key assets.
The 5 MW electrolyzer was produced and assembled at the Belfort site using an innovative production line, with teams in France, Germany, and Belgium contributing to the milestone.
John Cockerill Hydrogen acquired McPhy’s key assets after the Belfort Commercial Court accepted its bid on 8 July 2025. The acquisition included the Belfort plant, technologies, intellectual property, and approximately 80 employees in Europe.
Since the acquisition, the company has continued investing in expertise, industrial equipment, and the development of new generations of electrolyzers.
The Belfort site in France is focused on technology development and the assembly of future electrolyzer generations. Aspach, also in France, produces equipment, while Seraing in Belgium handles assembly for projects being deployed in Europe. Teams at Wildau in Germany also contributed to the completion of the first Belfort electrolyzer.
Aspach is preparing to begin production this summer of eight electrolyzers totaling 40 MW for a green hydrogen project in the Netherlands. The work follows the production of cells for a 25 MW green hydrogen plant in Belgium.
Nicolas de Coignac, CEO of John Cockerill Hydrogen, said: “When we acquired McPhy’s key assets a year ago, we made a commitment: to preserve this know-how, accelerate its industrialization, and manufacture in Europe. With this first electrolyzer produced in Belfort, we are turning our commitments into achievements.”
He added: “Belfort and Aspach demonstrate that we are ready – ready technologically and ready industrially.”
