China’s First Grid-Side “Electrochemical + Hydrogen” Storage Project Enters Commercial Operation

The Huade County Grid-Side Independent Energy Storage Demonstration Project in Inner Mongolia has successfully completed full-capacity three-cycle charge and discharge testing and passed acceptance by the West Inner Mongolia Power Grid, marking a major milestone for grid-side hydrogen  storage in China.

 

Located in Huade County, Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia, the project has a total capacity of 100 MW/400 MWh. It adopts an integrated energy storage solution combining short-duration electrochemical energy storage with long-duration hydrogen  storage, creating a multi-level energy regulation system capable of second-level response, hour-scale regulation, and inter-day and inter-seasonal energy storage.

 

The project includes a 90 MW/360 MWh electrochemical energy storage system for fast frequency regulation and smoothing fluctuations from wind and solar generation, as well as a 10 MW/40 MWh hydrogen storage system for long-duration energy storage. The hydrogen system integrates the full chain of hydrogen production, compression, storage and power generation.

 

Core hydrogen  storage equipment for the project was supplied by Edelman Hydrogen Energy Equipment Co., Ltd. The company has developed independent capabilities across water electrolysis hydrogen production equipment and fuel cell systems, providing equipment covering the entire process from green hydrogen production to hydrogen-to-power conversion. The project has also been recognized as an Excellent Energy Innovation Case under China’s 14th Five-Year Plan.

 

The three-cycle charge and discharge test is a key pre-commissioning assessment for energy storage power stations. It evaluates charging and discharging efficiency, coordinated system operation and grid dispatch response under challenging local conditions, including low temperatures and sandstorms.

 

Participating companies and project stakeholders carried out targeted optimization and detailed commissioning. All key performance indicators met the requirements for grid connection and commercial operation, enabling the project to enter commercial grid-connected operation.

 

As a member of the APEC Energy Partner Network, Edelman Hydrogen Energy Equipment has also shared practical experience from the Huade project at the APEC Zero Carbon Industrial Park Seminar, presenting China’s experience in deploying hydrogen storage and providing practical project references for Asia-Pacific economies.

 

Once fully operational, the project will provide ancillary services including grid peak shaving and frequency regulation. By addressing the intermittency of wind and solar power generation, it is expected to improve the local consumption of renewable electricity and provide a replicable reference for energy storage applications at large-scale renewable energy bases.

 

The project will support Inner Mongolia’s energy transition and contribute to China’s carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.

 

Looking ahead, Edelman Hydrogen Energy Equipment will continue to focus on green hydrogen and long-duration energy storage. Working with industry partners, the company aims to accelerate the large-scale deployment of hydrogen  storage across power grids, renewable energy bases and industrial parks, supporting the development of China’s new-type power system.
