The units represent 12% of Haffner Energy’s CORE100 programme and are intended for renewable hydrogen and power projects in the western United States.

Vitry-le-François, France – Haffner Energy has announced that California-based project developer OroCarbo has reserved 12 SYNOCA® C-iC units under the company’s CORE100 programme.

CORE100 is Haffner Energy’s industrial programme for deploying its first 100 standardised C-iC units. The programme uses standardisation and series production to accelerate commercial deployment. Customers can reserve production slots for modular units that can operate individually or be combined for larger projects.

OroCarbo intends to use the units in local renewable-energy hubs under development in California, Oregon and Washington state.

The projects would convert locally available residual biomass into renewable syngas. The syngas would primarily be used to produce renewable hydrogen for mobility and generate local electricity in areas where grid capacity or reliability is limited.

Marcella Franchi, Haffner Energy’s Chief Commercial Officer and Head of SAF, said the reservation advances the companies’ partnership and brings the CORE100 programme to the western United States. She described the strategy as producing energy close to both local resources and demand by converting biomass into renewable hydrogen and electricity.

From One Project to a Multi-Site Deployment

Haffner Energy and OroCarbo began working together in 2025 on a proposed 100-tonne-per-day biomethanol project in California.

The first phase involved an independent carbon-intensity study, completed during Haffner Energy’s 2025–2026 financial year. Haffner Energy said the results indicated strong decarbonisation potential.

The biomethanol project was subsequently placed on hold because it had not secured sufficient long-term methanol offtake commitments.

However, the work led to broader collaboration between the companies across several renewable-energy applications and locations. OroCarbo has expanded its development strategy from one biomethanol project to a portfolio addressing different regional energy requirements.

Brian Wong, founder and managing member of OroCarbo, said the company plans to build local energy hubs that convert residual biomass into renewable hydrogen and electricity. OroCarbo sees opportunities in hydrogen mobility and distributed power generation where grid constraints are a problem.

Modular Technology for Hydrogen and Power

Each SYNOCA® C-iC unit uses Haffner Energy’s proprietary thermolysis technology to convert residual biomass into renewable syngas.

Several units can be combined depending on the production capacity required. Their standardised design is intended to support repeated deployment across multiple sites.

Haffner Energy’s scope for the OroCarbo projects will be limited to supplying the SYNOCA® C-iC units and the engineering needed to integrate them into the plants.

Equipment that converts the renewable syngas into hydrogen or electricity will be selected and purchased in the United States. Adapting and certifying the equipment for applicable US standards is not included in Haffner Energy’s supply scope.

The approach is intended to simplify compliance with US standards, increase local content and industrial participation, and reduce exposure to import tariffs and transatlantic shipping costs.

The projects are expected to use forestry and agricultural residues. In California, using forestry residues could also contribute to forest management in areas exposed to wildfire risk.

One Customer Reserves 12% of CORE100

OroCarbo’s reservation covers 12 SYNOCA® C-iC units and includes a total reservation fee of €100,000.

At the current contractual price of €2.5 million per unit, the order could generate up to €30 million in future revenue for Haffner Energy.

The company said CORE100 continues to progress. Haffner Energy does not plan to announce every reservation individually but expects to provide a broader update on the programme shortly.
