55 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trucks Enter Service in Qingbaijiang, Chengdu

Shudao Toyota Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has delivered 55 hydrogen fuel cell commercial trucks under Chengdu’s hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicle demonstration project, with the 49-tonne vehicles now entering service in Qingbaijiang District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province.
Under the project, Shudao Toyota manufactures the hydrogen fuel cell systems, which are supplied to Sinotruk Chengdu Wangpai Commercial Vehicle Co., Ltd. for vehicle assembly. The completed trucks are then deployed by a Qingbaijiang district-owned investment company. The project brings together fuel cell system production, vehicle manufacturing and fleet operations within a single local industrial ecosystem.
The deployment marks another step in Chengdu’s efforts to develop its hydrogen industry and advance the Chengdu–Chongqing hydrogen corridor.
The trucks are equipped with the STL150 hydrogen fuel cell system, which draws on Toyota’s more than 30 years of fuel cell technology experience. The system has a rated output of 150 kW, a maximum efficiency of 64% and a stated service life of 30,000 hours. It can also start rapidly at temperatures as low as -30°C.
According to a Shudao Toyota production line representative, the trucks consume approximately 7.5 kg of hydrogen per 100 km, offering potential fuel-cost savings for logistics operators.
Based on current hydrogen prices and consumption estimates, hydrogen fuel costs for the trucks are reportedly lower than those of diesel vehicles. Combined with Sichuan’s policy providing toll-free highway access for hydrogen-powered vehicles, the cost competitiveness of hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks is improving in long-haul transport.
Under a five-year operating scenario involving 120,000 km of annual mileage and an 80% share of highway driving, the project estimates that total operating costs will be 10%–20% lower than those of other new-energy commercial vehicles. This estimate is based on the stated operating assumptions and should not be interpreted as a universal cost comparison across all vehicle types and operating conditions.
The project builds on a model combining Toyota’s technology, Shudao Group’s application scenarios and Sinotruk’s vehicle manufacturing capabilities.
Shudao Toyota was established through investment by Toyota Motor Corporation, Sichuan Shudao Equipment Technology Co., Ltd. and Sichuan Shudao Investment Group Co., Ltd. Its headquarters are in Qingbaijiang. The company’s first-phase production facility occupies approximately 10,000 m² of leased factory space at the Sinotruk Chengdu Wangpai site and has an annual production capacity of 2,000 hydrogen fuel cell systems.
The facility produces key components locally, including fuel cell stacks and auxiliary system components. Its product portfolio includes 90 kW, 150 kW and 300 kW systems for a range of commercial vehicle applications.
Shudao Group is developing a hydrogen industry chain spanning production, storage, transportation, refuelling and end use. Planned application areas include rail transit, road transport, logistics, mining, hydrogen refuelling stations and liquid-hydrogen-powered aviation.
Qingbaijiang has also been developing an integrated hydrogen industry ecosystem. Sinotruk Chengdu Wangpai has the production qualifications required to manufacture hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles, according to the source material. By August 2026, it had produced more than 1,800 such vehicles and delivered over 1,500.
Meanwhile, a district-owned state-owned platform company has established Chengdu Qinghuiyuan Automobile Transport Co., Ltd. to support fleet operations. The company reportedly operates more than 300 hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles. Local projects to recover hydrogen from hydrogen-containing off-gas are also intended to provide a stable, lower-cost hydrogen supply for heavy-duty trucks.
Together, local fuel cell system manufacturing, vehicle production, fleet operations and hydrogen supply are helping Qingbaijiang establish a more integrated hydrogen mobility ecosystem, with vehicles manufactured, refuelled and operated within the district.
