REFIRE Delivers Two 1.8-MW Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Generation Systems to Jinchuan Group

JINCHANG, Gansu, China — Jiangsu Pandong Electric Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of REFIRE Group, has delivered two 1.8-MW integrated hydrogen fuel cell power generation systems to Jinchuan Group Chemical New Materials Co., Ltd.

 

The systems will be deployed at Jinchuan Group’s chlor-alkali chemical hydrogen-power coupling demonstration project in Jinchang, Gansu Province. Located at Jinchuan Group’s No. 3 Plant, the project officially began construction in May 2026, with Phase I scheduled to be completed and commissioned by the end of this year.

 

The project features China’s first engineering-scale demonstration system integrating PSA hydrogen purification, solid-state hydrogen storage, fuel cell power generation, direct-current power supply and hydrogen production through chlor-alkali electrolysis. It is also China’s first deployed 3-MW-class integrated fuel cell power generation project.

 

Chlor-alkali production generates significant volumes of by-product hydrogen during caustic soda manufacturing. Recovering and utilizing this hydrogen can provide an important pathway for reducing emissions in energy-intensive industries. Under the project, the by-product hydrogen will be purified and stored before being fed into fuel cells to generate electricity and heat, creating a closed-loop hydrogen-power system covering hydrogen production, storage, power generation and power consumption.

 

According to project estimates, the system is expected to reduce coal consumption by approximately 60,000 tonnes per year and cut CO₂ emissions by up to 160,000 tonnes annually.

 

Controlled by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of Gansu Province, Jinchuan Group is a Fortune Global 500 company and one of the world’s leading producers of nickel, cobalt and platinum-group metals. Jinchuan Group Chemical New Materials Co., Ltd. serves as the group’s operating entity for its chlor-alkali chemical business.

 

The deployment of fuel cell power generation in a core industrial production environment demonstrates the growing application of hydrogen power technology and integrated engineering solutions in energy-intensive industries.

 

The two delivered systems have a combined installed capacity of 3.6 MW. Under high-altitude operating conditions, they achieve a rated electrical efficiency of more than 48%. With heat recovery, overall system energy efficiency exceeds 85%. The systems are designed to operate reliably across a wide temperature range from -30°C to 45°C, with a design service life of more than 40,000 operating hours.

 

As China accelerates the development of new power systems, flexible distributed power generation is becoming increasingly important. By integrating hydrogen energy storage and regulation, distributed power generation and direct-current power supply, the project represents a significant industrial application of hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Since 2022, REFIRE has expanded its stationary fuel cell power generation business into a range of applications, including industrial parks, oilfields and construction sites. The delivery of the 3.6-MW systems marks a significant step in the company’s transition from hundred-kilowatt-scale deployments to multi-megawatt applications.

 

Once fully commissioned, the project is expected to serve as a global benchmark for fuel cell power generation in energy-intensive industries. REFIRE said it will continue to leverage its field-validated technology platform to support the development of the global zero-carbon power market.
