Alfa Laval has been selected as the technology provider for electrolyzer cooling equipment at the Onuba H2 project in Huelva, Spain, one of Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen developments.

The Onuba H2 project is located at the La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva and is led by Moeve. With an initial electrolysis capacity of 300 MW and an option to expand by a further 105 MW, the facility is expected to produce 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, making it the largest electrolyzer plant in Southern Europe.

Alfa Laval will supply 60 heat exchangers covering balance of plant cooling, electrolyzer cooling, and gas cooling. The company said these solutions are critical for maintaining optimal operating conditions within the electrolyzer, supporting efficiency, reliability, and safety at scale.

The Onuba H2 project serves as the industrial anchor for the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, described as the most ambitious renewable hydrogen project in Spain. The European Commission has designated the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley as a Project of Common Interest (PCI), a status that facilitates access to public grants and subsidies.

The project targets decarbonization of transport and industrial sectors that are difficult to electrify, including heavy transport and intensive industry.
