Cefmof Hydrogen aims to promote the introduction of hydrogen and find new, practical applications for it. The company operates Finland's first hydrogen refueling station in Jyväskylä and is building its own hydrogen production unit in the area. In addition to transportation, hydrogen can be utilized as a raw material and as part of various industrial processes, where renewable hydrogen can replace fossil raw materials and promote the carbon cycle.
Reducer is developing electrified technology that converts captured carbon dioxide and bio-based carbon feeds into synthesis gas and activated carbon. Synthesis gas consists mainly of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and can be used as a raw material in various industrial processes. From Cefmof Hydrogen's perspective, the opportunity to combine Reducer's technology with renewable hydrogen and jointly explore what new applications and low-carbon solutions can be enabled with it is particularly interesting.
"In addition to hydrogen production and infrastructure construction, concrete applications are needed where hydrogen can create new value. In Reducer's technology, we see a new and interesting opportunity to combine renewable hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide and utilize them in the development of new solutions. Together with Reducer, we want to explore what kind of opportunities this opens up for the use of hydrogen and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. The joint pilot starting in Jyväskylä is the first concrete step in this," says Lauri Perämäki, Business Director of Cefmof Hydrogen Oy .
The investment deepens the already initiated cooperation
Cefmof Hydrogen will invest EUR 1.5 million in Reducer and become a shareholder in the company. Cefmof Hydrogen's focus is not on startup investments, but in this case the company sees significant potential in Reducer's technology and its combination with renewable hydrogen. The investment supports the further development and commercialization of Reducer's technology and deepens the companies' already established cooperation.
"Cefmof Hydrogen is a very good partner for us, as the company is building hydrogen production capacity and actively developing new applications for hydrogen. In cooperation, we can concretely investigate how synthesis gas produced with Reducer's technology can be further refined using renewable hydrogen and what kind of new applications this enables. The investment strengthens our opportunities to continue developing and commercializing our technology, and the cooperation brings us valuable expertise in hydrogen and its value chains," says Johanna Grönroos, CEO and founder of Reducer .
Jyväskylä pilot makes cooperation concrete
Reducer, Mustankorkea and Cefmof Hydrogen are preparing a methanation pilot in connection with the research and development center to be established in Jyväskylä, where the biogenic carbon dioxide generated in Mustankorkea's biogas production and the hydrogen produced by Cefmof Hydrogen in Jyväskylä are intended to be utilized in the production of synthetic methane. The first tests are scheduled to start in 2027.
Reducer is preparing to scale its technology towards industrial scale and is planning its first one-megawatt continuous pilot plant in Ranua.
"Reduciner has progressed rapidly from technology development to piloting and commercialization. The addition of Cefmof Hydrogen brings the company not only a new investor but also a partner with concrete expertise in hydrogen production, infrastructure and the development of new applications. It strengthens Reducer's ability to take its technology towards industrial-scale solutions," says Juha Lindfors, Chairman of the Board of Reducer and partner at Lifeline Ventures .
Reducer raised a total of EUR 3.6 million in its first funding round in May 2026 from Lifeline Ventures, Voima Ventures and the Mikko Kodisoja Foundation. At the same time, VTT transferred the technology and intellectual property rights to the company as an in-kind contribution.
