A procurement notice for preparing the project proposal and feasibility study report of the Tianwan Nuclear-Powered SOEC Hydrogen Production Demonstration Project was released on September 29.
The procuring entity is CNNC Operation & Maintenance Technology Co., Ltd., while Jiangsu Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. serves as the project demand unit.
The scope of services includes pre-development consulting for the nuclear-powered SOEC hydrogen production demonstration project, covering the phased preparation of the project proposal, feasibility study report and interface compatibility impact assessment report.
The service location is Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province.
Related Project Progress
In December 2024, the complete system of the Tianwan Nuclear Hydrogen Production Project successfully completed start-up commissioning and trial operation. The project adopts PEM water electrolysis technology.
By August 2025, the project’s cumulative hydrogen production had exceeded 30,000 Nm³.
The technology uses a proton exchange membrane (PEM) as the separator, allowing proton transfer while preventing hydrogen and oxygen crossover. Catalysts coated on the cathode and anode enable efficient water electrolysis to produce hydrogen and oxygen.
The electrolyser achieves hydrogen production efficiency of up to 90%, with comprehensive energy consumption of only 4.5 kWh/Nm³. The heat-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of nuclear-powered water electrolysis reaches 31%.
The produced hydrogen has a purity of 99.999%, and the system provides an operating life of up to 80,000 hours. Key advantages include low energy consumption, rapid response capability and high-purity hydrogen production.
