The Hydrogen Quality Testing and Evaluation Laboratory at Xiamen Institute of Product Quality Supervision and Inspection has officially opened in Xiamen, Fujian Province. It is the first and currently the only gas testing laboratory in Fujian equipped to conduct hydrogen quality testing for fuel cell applications, filling a gap in the province’s testing capabilities and providing essential quality assurance infrastructure for the standardized, high-quality development of the regional hydrogen industry.

The laboratory was established under the Key Laboratory of Safety Testing and Evaluation Technology for High-Energy-Density New Energy Batteries. Equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced testing instruments, it has established a comprehensive testing framework and strong technical capabilities.

The laboratory conducts testing and analysis of industrial hydrogen, pure hydrogen, high-purity hydrogen, ultra-pure hydrogen, hydrogen fuel for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell vehicles, and nitrogen in accordance with national standards, including GB/T 37244-2018. It can carry out all 13 key impurity tests specified for fuel cell-grade hydrogen, covering the core requirements of China’s hydrogen quality standards.

The laboratory has also expanded its capabilities to evaluate complete fuel cell systems. It has established a high-precision fuel cell engine testing system, enabling comprehensive assessment of hydrogen feedstock quality, fuel cell system performance, safety and compatibility. In collaboration with Xiamen University and Tan Kah Kee Innovation Laboratory, it is developing an integrated evaluation framework covering the entire hydrogen value chain, from hydrogen production and hydrogen quality testing to end-use applications.

As hydrogen refuelling infrastructure expands and fuel cell demonstration projects grow across Fujian Province, requirements for hydrogen quality management are increasing, creating a greater need for technical testing and evaluation services.

Going forward, the laboratory will continue to advance hydrogen testing technologies and strengthen its capabilities across the hydrogen value chain. It plans to provide technical services covering hydrogen quality testing, fuel cell performance evaluation and safety risk assessment. These efforts will help strengthen regional hydrogen quality and safety management, improve standardization across Fujian’s hydrogen industry, and support its safe, stable and high-quality development.
