German researchers have launched a €1.5 million ($1.7m) project to develop more efficient and scalable electrodes for alkaline water electrolysis, Frankfurt-based scientific organisation DECHEMA announced Monday.

The 30-month FLASH project will develop nickel electrodes designed to remove gas bubbles more quickly and improve mass transport, reducing energy losses during hydrogen production, DECHEMA said in its release.

Researchers will modify the shape, surface and coating of nickel electrodes to help gas bubbles escape more quickly and reduce energy losses during hydrogen production.

The project brings together researchers from TU Darmstadt, RWTH Aachen University and TU Clausthal, with support from the European Research Association for Sheet Metal Working (EFB) and DECHEMA.

FLASH is funded by Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) under the government's Industrial Collective Research programme.

The project will also focus on scalable manufacturing methods, aiming to make the technology transferable to industrial production processes.
