Energy major Shell has received the first electrolysis stacks for its 100 MW REFHYNE 2 renewable hydrogen project at its Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland in Wesseling, Germany.
The first 14 of 150 planned stacks have arrived at the site with further deliveries scheduled over the coming months as the project moves towards commissioning, Shell Germany said in a Thursday press release.
Manufactured by UK electrolyser developer ITM Power, the stacks use proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology to produce hydrogen from water and renewable electricity.
The hydrogen will be fed into the site's existing hydrogen network and used in production processes, reducing the carbon intensity of operations and products.
REFHYNE 2 is expected to produce up to 16,000 mt/year of renewable hydrogen at full capacity, depending on renewable electricity availability, and begin operations in 2027.
Linde is delivering the project as general contractor - Shell already operates the 10 MW REFHYNE 1 electrolyser at the site.
The Quantum View: REFHYNE 2 is a cornerstone project in Shell's European hydrogen portfolio, alongside its 200 MW Holland Hydrogen 1 plant in the Netherlands.
Its progress towards commissioning is also significant for Germany, where large-scale renewable hydrogen production remains limited.
The project combines production with existing industrial demand at Wesseling, providing a direct use for the hydrogen as wider infrastructure develops.
